Charles V (Spanish: Carlos I or Carlos V, German: Karl V., Dutch: Karel V, French: Charles Quint, 24 February 1500 – 21 September 1558) was ruler of the Holy Roman Empire from 1519 and, as Charles I of Spain, of the Spanish realms from 1506 until his abdication in 1556. At that time his realm, which has been described as the empire on which the sun never sets, spanned nearly 4 million square kilometers across Europe, the Far East, and the Americas.

The unification of the crowns of Aragon and Castile laid the basis for modern Spain and the Spanish Empire. Spain was Europe's leading power throughout the 16th century and most of the 17th century, a position reinforced by trade and wealth from colonial possessions. Spain reached its apogee during the reigns of the first two Spanish Habsburgs – Charles I (1516–1556) and Philip II (1556–1598). This period also saw the Italian Wars, the revolt of the comuneros, the Dutch revolt, the Morisco revolt, clashes with the Ottomans, the Anglo-Spanish war and wars with France.

Kingdom of Castile was one of the medieval kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula. It emerged as a political autonomous entity in the 9th century. It was called County of Castile and was held in vassalage from the Kingdom of León. Its name comes from the host of castles constructed in the region. It was one of the kingdoms that founded the Crown of Castile, and the Kingdom of Spain.

Kingdom of León was an independent country situated in the northwest region of the Iberian Peninsula. It was founded in 910 AD when the Christian princes of Asturias along the northern coast of the peninsula shifted their main seat from Oviedo to the city of León. The Atlantic provinces became the Kingdom of Portugal in 1139, and the eastern, inland part of the kingdom was joined to the Kingdom of Castile by 1230.

From 1296 to 1301, the Kingdom of León was again independent and after the union with Castile kept as a Kingdom until 1833, latterly as part of united Spain. By the R.D. of 30 November 1833, the Kingdom of León was considered one of the Spanish regions and divided into the provinces of León, Zamora and Salamanca. In 1978, León was included with six provinces from the Old Castile in the Autonomous Community of Castile and León.,

Nassau County

Nassau County is a suburban county in the New York Metropolitan Area east of New York City in the U.S. state of New York. The name of the county comes from an old name for Long Island, which was at one time named Nassau, after Dutch William of Nassau, Prince of Orange (who later also ruled as King William III.) The county colors, orange and blue, are also the colors of the House of Orange. Nassau's county seat is Mineola. Long Island Sound

Long Island Sound (colloquially referred to as the Sound and numerous ) is an estuary of the Atlantic Oceanrivers located in the United States between Connecticut to the north and Long Island, New York to the south. The mouth of the Connecticut River at Old Saybrook, Connecticut, empties into the sound. On its western end the sound is bounded to the north by Westchester County, New York and the Bronx, and connects to the East River. On its eastern end it opens to Block Island Sound.

New York Giants was a name used by three different New York soccer teams. Two of these teams were associated with the New York Giants baseball franchise. The first team that used the name played in the American League of Professional Football in 1894. The second team played in the American Soccer League between 1923 and 1930 while the third team played in the same league between 1930 and 1932.

The Battle of Fort Washington

The Battle of Fort Washington was a battle fought in the American Revolutionary War between the United States and Great Britain. The battle, fought on November 16, 1776, was a decisive British victory and the entire garrison of Fort Washington was forced to surrender.

After defeating the Continental Army under the command of their Commander-in-Chief, George Washington, at the Battle of White Plains the British army, under the command of William Howe, looked to capture the last American stronghold, Fort Washington, on Manhattan. George Washington had thought of abandoning the Fort and removing its garrison of 3,000 men to New Jersey but had been convinced by General Nathaniel Greene to defend it.

On November 16, Howe launched his attack on the fort. The assault came from three different directions, the north, east and south. The attack was delayed due to tides in the Harlem River that prevented some of the troops from landing. When the attack did begin, the southern and western American defenses fell quickly. In the North there was stiff resistance to the Hessian attack but they too were eventually overwhelmed. With the fort surrounded by land and sea the Fort's commander, Robert Magaw, chose to surrender the fort rather than try to hold out. A total of 59 Americans were killed and 2,837 became prisoners of the British. With this defeat, the main American army under George Washington was chased across New Jersey and into Pennsylvania, setting the stage for the battles of Trenton and Princeton.

Evacuation Day

Following the American Revolution, Evacuation Day on November 25 marks the day in 1783 when the last vestige of British authority in the United States — its troops in New York — departed from Manhattan. The last shot of the American Revolutionary War was reported to be fired on this day, as a British gunner on one of the departing ships fired a cannon at jeering crowds gathered on the shore of Staten Island, at the mouth of New York Harbor (the shot fell well short of the shore).
